In November 2024, the Mobile SPCA celebrated its 10th year of transporting cats and dogs across the nation. Over the past decade, the organization has relocated 8018 dogs and puppies and 71 cats and kittens to communities that have no puppies and kittens!
Through the generosity of and our partnership with the ASPCA, Mobile SPCA has been able to share our transports with Mobile County, City of Mobile, Prichard, Saraland, and Baldwin County animal shelters, along with several local rescue groups, and thousands of area citizens who found themselves with an unwanted litter. This collaborative effort has ensured that area companion animals find loving homes rather than contributing to overpopulation in the Mobile area.
Although we have transported almost 100 cats and kittens these past 10 years, we really don’t need to. We can place sweet, loving kitties locally as quickly as we can get them fixed and ready for adoption. In the past 10 years, we have found homes for over 5,000 cats and kittens. Yes, 5,000 altered, vaccinated, and microchipped cats and kittens.
The sad part is that those 5,000+ cats and kittens and 8,000+ dogs and puppies from our area were homeless. Unwanted. Unloved. Moreover, these are only the dogs and cats that we know about.
Over the years, we have been awarded spay/neuter grants from national funders. We have negotiated reduced prices from local vet clinics for spay/neuter surgeries and have funded $20 vouchers and our very popular $10 Off Spay/Neuter coupon. We knew it was coming, but this is the first year in 15 years that we were not awarded a spay/neuter grant. Unfortunately, most national funders do not offer spay/neuter grants anymore. This year we are on our own!
Since 2006, Mobile SPCA has funded or assisted with 44,865 spay/neuter surgeries. We were making good progress in reducing the number of breeding animals in our area, and then the pandemic hit. People not only adopted unaltered dogs and cats for company, but the number of veterinarians offering spay/neuter surgery plummeted. When the country reopened and some people went back to work, suddenly, those animals that were once the beloved company became unwanted, unaltered, and breeding pets. It was a perfect recipe for an explosion of puppies and kittens!
We get calls every single day from people who have a litter that they need gone. And gone, today! All local shelters, including the Mobile SPCA, are always full. We are transporting as fast as we can, but we need to spay and neuter, too. Since puppies and kittens are popping up everywhere, the need is immediate! We need to raise at least $15,000 to cover the cost of our $10-off coupons for 2025. And some people need a little more financial help. We try to help every single person that contacts us and asks for assistance.
So, to that end, we are launching a Spring Spay/Neuter Campaign. If you can donate, we will be deeply grateful for your support. You can mail in a check, donate online, or call and we will take your donation over the phone.
Each $10 we raise will help one dog or one cat get fixed. Unaltered dogs can have an average of ten litters in their lifetime. A cat can have 2 to 3 litters a year! We have to get this breeding under control and we need your help to make this happen.
So today, we’re reaching out to ask if you would be willing to make a donation to support this important work. Your generosity truly makes a difference. Over the years, we’ve seen incredible results thanks to the generosity of people like you, and we’re committed to reaching our goal to help our furry friends once again in 2025.
