MOBILE SPCA RECEIVES $25,000 GRANT FROM PETSMART CHARITIES TO HELP MORE ADOPTABLE PETS FIND FAMILIES IN MOBILE

March 20, 2024 By MSPCA Staff Leave a Comment

PetSmart Charities National Adoption Week In-Person Events to Take Place at the
Pinebrook Shopping Center Location March 18-24

Mobile SPCA has received a $25,000 grant from PetSmart Charities® to help prepare more pets in Mobile for adoption. Some four million pets find themselves in U.S. shelters each year. In partnership with PetSmart Charities, Mobile SPCA will bring adoptable pets to the Pinebrook PetSmart location in support of National Adoption Week, taking place March 18 – 24, 2024.

Money from this grant will help get cats and dogs ready for adoption. Funds will help cover the cost of vaccines, heartworm and flea and tick prevention, heartworm test, spay or neuter, microchip, and veterinarian health check. We estimate that just the medical care for each dog or puppy we get ready for adoption costs us approximately $160 each and each cat or kitten costs us approximately $105 each. We normally place about 500 cats and kittens and 200 dogs and puppies locally, while transporting an additional 1,000 dogs and puppies annually. As you can see, we depend on donations from our supporters to make up the difference!

While cats and kittens are available all week long, dogs will be available during the in-store event March 23 from 9 until noon. The Mobile SPCA invites pet lovers to make room in their homes for pets in need. PetSmart Charities is celebrating its 30th anniversary and encourages people to consider finding room in their hearts and homes for pets like Moose – a lovely big dog that was tied to our gate early one morning. In celebration of PetSmart’s 30th anniversary, all adoption fees for bully mix dogs have been reduced to $30! “Being in the store, surrounded by lots of adoptable dogs and cats is always fun” says Janine Woods, Mobile SPCA Executive Director. “People can come into the store and get to meet a lots of pets at the same time, and hopefully, fall in love with one of our great pets! If you can’t come to the store, come to the shelter.”

“With PetSmart Charities help we are working to get dogs and cats in and out of the shelter as quickly as possible. There are so many on our waiting list to come in, so many people need our help finding animals new homes,” Woods added. “This grant helps us help the community. It is vital to our adoption program.”

“Shelters across the U.S. are struggling to keep pace with the number of animals coming in and need support from their communities to bring pets and people together,” said Heidi Marston, director of pet placement at PetSmart Charities. “We’re proud to support the Mobile SPCA and the essential work they do to care and advocate for the animals that come through their door in need of loving families. Please consider supporting their lifesaving work through volunteering, fostering, adopting, or by making a donation.”

PetSmart Charities National Adoption Week is a special time during the year. PetSmart stores feature adoptable pets to meet and cuddle in spacious areas, and staff and volunteers are on-hand to make introductions and answer questions. Potential pet parents can also learn about the products and services they’ll need for the best possible start with their new family members.

Meet Luna, a lively and friendly adult cat who calls the shelter her temporary home. Luna's energy is infectious; she loves to play and explore, making every day an adventure. Despite her vivacious spirit, Luna prefers the company of humans over other animals. She enjoys the quiet moments as much as the playful ones, appreciating a good petting session or a calm evening by your side. Luna's independent streak makes her a unique companion. She's a cat who knows her mind, and isn't afraid to show it. Luna's friendly and energetic nature, combined with her love for human companionship, makes her the perfect addition to any home ready to embrace her vibrant personality. Adopt Luna and experience the joy of her companionship.
If you are interested in adopting a Luna or another a great Mobile SPCA cat or dog, call the Mobile SPCA at (251) 633-3531 or click here.  You will need to fill out an online application, so get started!
