The Kibble

PET OF THE WEEK

My name is Bowser and I was transferred from the city shelter as part of the Maddie's Pet Rescue Project 4 years ago.   I was adopted as a puppy, but my family can no  longer keep me  because they are moving out of town for a new job.  I am crate and house trained.  I do well with other dogs. I am great with kids and love to go for walks.  I love relaxing on the couch.  I ride great in the car.  I am good for baths but hate my nails trimmed.  I am over the chewing stage.  According to my previous owner, I can go off leash and come when called.  I am used to sleeping under my owner's bed.  I am just 4 years old and 47 pounds. The kennel staff all save I am a good boy! If you would like to adopt, call (251) 633-3531 or complete the online

IGive.com - sign up today and raise lots of easy money for the Mobile SPCA

What's better than giving repeated cash donations to your favorite charity - The Mobile SPCA?  Doing it...and not having it cost you a PENNY! Sounds hard to believe, but it's true.

Here's how it works.  IGive.com automatically tracks your internet spending at almost 1000 popular stores like Amazon, Best Buy, Toys R Us, Staples, etc., and then donates a percentage of that money to your favorite charity.  And that's not all...by simply signing up and installing your IGive button, the MSPCA will get five bucks...and the first time you make an on-line purchase, we get another five bucks.  MERRY CHRISTMAS! It's super simple, quick to install, and completely safe.  Simply go to IGive.com, type "Mobile SPCA" in the first field specifying your charity, complete the balance of the information, and quickly install the IGive button on your computer.  That's it!  Once confirmed, each time you shop at any of the participating stores, your IGive button will automatically link your donation percentage to the MSPCA and the money will start rolling in. You'll find a wealth of information that will answer any question you have when you visit IGive.com.  Won't you please do it today?

Nursing Home Visitation

The Mobile SPCA Nursing Home Visitation team is looking for new members. We need people who are willing to make a commitment to the program and who will show up regularly. Right now the demand for our visits far exceeds our capabilities. We visit both the Regency Atria and a different nursing home or assisted living facility once a month.

We encourage you to bring your pet for a trial and see for yourself how rewarding these visits can be. You will laugh, you will cry, you will smile as you see how much the interaction with animals means to the lonely residents.

Pet Food Pantry

Every day a dozen or so familes call the Mobile SPCA office and need food for their pets. Reasons for the need are numerous - a lost job, illness, an unexpected expense. Whatever the reason, we try to give everyone a bag of food and offer spay/neuter assistance when their pets are unaltered. This summer we have seen the requests for food soar. While we know some people are taking advantage of the free food, many more truely need our help. We are grateful for donations of pet food from the Target on Schillinger Road, Jansen Wagner of Purina and Mary Gutierrez, Director of Earth Ethics. Mary received a Pepsi Refresh Grant and has generously partnered with the Mobile SPCA to donate food to the pet pantry. Sadly, even with the help we have received, we still need more food! If you can pick up an extra bag of food, donate a Walmart gift card, bring in the rest of that bag of food your pet refuses to eat we would be extremely grateful as would some of the poor dogs and cats in our community.

Microchip Gift Certificates

1 in 3 pets goes missing during its lifetime, and without proper ID, 90% never return home. A microchip for your pet is the best protection with permanent ID that can never be removed or become impossible to read. You may purchase a microchip certificate for just $20 plus an addition $5 for implantation by a registered veterinarian. Call (251) 633-3531 for more information.

What are microchips?

Microchips are tiny transponders, about the size of a grain of rice, that use radio frequency waves to transmit information about your pet. They're implanted just under the skin, usually right between the shoulder blades.

How do they work?

Each microchip contains a registration number and the phone number of the registry for the particular brand of chip. A handheld scanner reads the radio frequency of the chip and displays this information. The animal shelter or vet clinic that finds your pet can contact the registry to get your name and phone number.

Can a microchip get lost inside my pet?

Your pet's subcutaneous tissue usually bonds to the chip within 24 hours, preventing it from moving, although there's a small chance that the chip could migrate. But it can't actually get lost inside your pet.

How long do microchips last?

Microchips are designed to work for 25 years.

Can a microchip replace my pet's collar and tags?

Despite advances in universal scanners and registry procedures, microchips aren't foolproof, and you shouldn't rely on them exclusively to protect your pet. Universal scanners can detect a competing company's chip, but they may not be able to read the data. And if shelter or vet clinic personnel don't use the scanner properly, they may fail to detect a chip.
