Free Pet Adoptions May 31 and June 1
The Mobile SPCA Joins Maddie’s® Pet Adoption Days
to Find Homes for All Our Cats and Dogs
Though Maddie's® Pet Adoption Days celebrated their fifth anniversary in 2014, this was the first year that Mobile has participated. It was an honor and privilege to be chosen as only 14 communities in the United States were. And since this was our first foray into the event, we weren't sure exactly what to expect.
On May 31st and June 1st, six local rescue groups and animal shelters participated in "Maddie's® Pet Adoption Days" sponsored by Maddie's Fund®. Not only did Maddie's Fund® sponsor the adoption fee (making the pet "free" for the adopter), they had set aside $10 million to provide shelters and rescue groups with an adoption "stipend" for every animal adopted during this event. The stipends range from $500 to $2000, payable to the adopting group or shelter.
Maddie was a beloved Miniature Schnauzer whose unconditional love, devotion, loyalty and spirit inspired her caregivers to start a charitable foundation, Maddie's Fund®, in her name.
Mobile SPCA was the lead agency for our area and were joined by Mobile County Animal Shelter, ARF (Animal Rescue Foundation), City of Mobile Animal Shelter, FOMAS (Friends of Mobile Animal Shelter), and Prichard Animal Shelter.
The event was held in the Pinebrook Shopping Center in Mobile, at the old Blockbuster location. Dogs and puppies were offered for adoption there, and at PetSmart in the same shopping center there were cats and kittens available as well.
The event was to begin at 10:00 a.m. each day and continue until 3:00 p.m. or until all available animals had found homes. We were astounded to see a long line waiting on Saturday morning at 8:00 a.m. and impressed (but also unprepared) for the line to grow past Stein Mart by 10:00 a.m.
We had encouraged interested adopters to pre-qualify the week preceding the event and many did. But just because the adoption fees were waived did not mean that the screening process for responsible owners was. Those who did not pre-qualify completed applications on-site before being allowed to choose a pet to become a family member.
Even with the long lines and the heat, most people were in good spirits and happy to be able to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to choose a homeless pet without having to pay an adoption fee.
At the end of the weekend 465 dogs and cats were placed in (hopefully) forever homes! The Mobile SPCA placed 84 digs and 31 cats. Maddie's® Pet Adoption Days 2014 was the most successful adoption event weekend in our area ever.
We learned from our mistakes and shortcomings this year and if we are fortunate enough to be asked to participate again, the next event will be smoother, bigger and better.
Maddie's® Pet Adoption Days - even with the generosity of Maddie's Fund® - would not have been possible without the support of Mobile animal lovers, participating rescue groups and shelters, our faithful volunteers and friends and supporters who we have learned we can always count on. THANK YOU, MOBILE and thank you Maddie's Fund® for giving us an opportunity to participate!
